Downton Abbey / Highclere Castle

County: Hampshire

Highclere Castle is more than just the setting for Downton Abbey.

Highclere Castle in Hampshire is better known to many as the fictional stately home, Downton Abbey. However it also has historical links to the discovery of King Tutankhamun's tomb in Egypt as the 5th Earl Carnarvon funded Howard Carter's expedition in 1925. Highclere Castle has been home to the Carnarvon family since the late 1600s.

Need to know:

  • Please see Highclere Castle website for opening days - it's not open all year round
  • Online tickets often get sold out months ahead. It is still possible to buy walk-up tickets if this is the case. I say that on these occasions I can't guarantee 100% you'll get in, but everyone I've taken there has always got in.
  • I don't come around the house with you; they have their own volunteers in the rooms

Often combined with a visit to Windsor or Stonehenge. For die-hard Downton Abbey fans, a visit to Bampton in the Cotswolds where the village was set, is about an hour from Highclere.
