County: Surrey

Commuter land meets areas of outstanding natural beauty.

If people contemplate Surrey, then it's probably thought of as an affluent commuter belt area lying immediately south of, and encroached into by, London. However, there is much more to this county than stressed commuters and sky-high housing. Surrey is said to be the most wooded county in the country, and outside of the larger urbanised areas, pretty villages dot the landscape. A visit to Shere in the Surrey Hills (an area of outstanding natural beauty) is a 'must' for fans of the film The Holiday. Probably the most famous attraction is the star of the show, Hampton Court Palace.

Surrey is also home to the world-renowned RHS Wisley with its world-class horticulture and flag-ship gardens. A stroll round here is enchanting and delights the senses, even in Winter. If you like a tipple, then Surrey is home to several award-winning vineyards (yes, really!), or if you prefer gin or beer, and visits can be arranged, with lots of sampling. A good job you'd have your own driver for the day!

Need to know:

  • Can be adapted to suit a long Heathrow layover
  • Journey times can be delayed, especially at rush hour, because of heavy traffic congestion.
  • Tours don't usually visit alcoholic sites, but can certainly be incorporated if desired, and if time allows, into a tour.
  • Please see entry for Hampton Court Palace for more information on that attraction

Can be combined with Windsor; occasionally Stonehenge.
